An MBK Mini Mini-Me

thumbThailand often writes checks its body can't cash, putting great emphasis on plans and initiatives that, on the surface, sound pretty good but actually have very little chance of developing into anything useful due to lack of support and/or mismanagement. The disastrous Elite Card program comes to mind, as does Bangkok being the fashion capital of Asia, and Thailand being pushed as the 'Detroit of Asia' (have you seen Detroit lately? No thanks). The latest is PM Abhisit's declaration that Thailand should be a creative ASEAN hub. It's catching a bit of flack, but there have been several examples where Thai artisans have shown that they can be outstandingly creative - as in the example below.

A New Year Memory – Attacked by Fireworks on the River

blamA few years ago, some friends and I decided to rent a boat for New Year's Eve, load it with snacks and drinks, a stereo, and steam up and down the Chao Phraya River all night. At midnight, we thought, we'd park the boat next to the barge that sets off the traditional fireworks. It was a hell of a night, actually, super-fun, with about 40 people on the boat living it up in true Bangkok style. However, the fireworks didn't really go as planned, and luckily, I had my camera going at the time. I just found this video burried on my hard drive and thought it'd be fun to put up.

Thailand’s Version of Workplace Safety

One of the first things many visitors notice about Thailand is that all the construction workers - putting in ten hour days in 38 degree heat - wear long-sleeve shirts, gloves, full-face masks and wide brimmed hats.  It often confuses the pasty tourist, already dripping with sweat after strolling a few hundred feet out of their air-conned hotel lobby.  The reason: dark skin is considered ugly here in Asia, and therefore, white skin is very desirable, like in this ridiculous ad that sees a girl using light reflecting off her skin to signal a boat at sea.  The reasoning behind the parka-clad construction workers is that working in the sun is a sure sign to get uglier - better to sweat than get a tan (this is likely a holdover from days of yore, when the aristocratic class did no menial labour, and therefore were never outside in the sun).  But the other thing that many people notice is the apparent disregard for workplace safety on nearly every construction site.

Of Rice and Men

My friend John recited something very funny to me today, a quote from around the 15th century from a Thai person describing the then-strange sight of white European explorers. We laughed a lot because, despite being written about half a millennium ago, it's still an amazingly succinct and strangely accurate description. I imagine that it still sums up your average Thai person's view of us whities.
