Hey Bruno, good question and no surprise that the website sucks and they never answer the phone. Welcome to Thai bureaucracy. I don’t think you need to make an appointment – I never did anyway, and I’ve never heard of anyone having to do that. Things MAY have changed, but I’d be surprised. Just imagine 300 people a day making appointments via phone…bigger headache than it’s worth. 🙂

I’m Bruno from France – Thank you for this great article, very well detailed.
I’m currently trying to take the Thai driver’s license test in Bangkok as you did but I am wondering if we need to pre-register by phone or online before showing up at the Department of Land Transport. They do have an online registration form but we can’t fill the ID number section with letters, so only Thai IDs are accepted (no passport). I also tried to reach them by phone a dozen of times but they just won’t pick up the phone. As I work from Monday to Friday, I have to take a day off to get there, so I would not appreciate to be rejected because I haven’t taken an appointment.

Do you have any idea how I could solve my problem? Thanks in advance for your help!

Applied 4 my licence, only here 4 six months of each year. Appart from toing and frowing different office buildings was a doddle! 220 baht 4 two year licence, result. Did the traffic light test, no probs, failed the break test 2 times then took big shoe off and passed!, amazing thailand! No computer or physical test!. Why? Only applied 4 licence because got fined by honest police 4 not having int driving licence!

I had to sit through 5 hours of traffic videos and then do an e exam. The next day i took the actual driving test….failed…hit one of the red posts during the parralel park and then parked too far away from the kerb…my tyres were on the white line…so i could not of got any closer. Back in 3 days time to try again…btw…2000 baht now for a car licence here.
