Good point Siamerican. I don't have kids yet so I think I still have a few more years of self-serving bitterness to use up. When/if kids come along, I think I need to chill out. :)

I second your sentiment about the shallow holiday season in Thailand. While I didn't mind all the beer garden atmosphere that emerges around Central World in Bangkok, the crowded scene with everybody needing to go take pictures in front of the huge, fake Christmas tree just makes me irritated. However, once you have kids, even if in Thailand, the need to put some importance back into Christmas emerges. I'll let mine experience their own disappointment and enlightenment in finding out that Santa's not real...

Couldn't agree with you more Greg. As each year passes for me here, the less I care about Christmas. Leaving on Friday to Vancouver and while everyone will be in full swing, I'll be freezing my buns off and thinking of the cool season in BKK. Ironic.

Poor Thing, I never said anything about Thailand being the problem. The point was that Christmas has ceased to be a time that YOU MUST spend with your family. Not seeing them at this time of year isn't any more 'sad' than not seeing them on any other arbitrary date throughout the year.

Perhaps if you can't afford to fly to Canada once every 12 months, the problem isn't Thailand, it's your own personal situation. Not being sarcastic or nasty here, but it sounds a bit sad if getting to see your own family isn't an option at this time of year.

Mike, I agree, it's kind of a bummer, and with kids apparently your perspective changes quite a bit. I'm looking forward to taking my wife to Canada for Christmas in the next few years, so that's exciting, but getting her excited about it here is hard because she's only ever seen it through the lens of malls and shopping.

Anne, yeah, snow would be nice! For a few days, anyway. At least something below 25º. :D
