Hi Mikhail,

That's unfortunate but not really unheard of. To many foreigners - especially those without a lot of worldly knowledge - Thailand is known for three things - food, whores, and monks. I think many Thais would actually be surprised and probably a bit angry to learn that. Take that stereotype and put it in the minds of a conservative white couple - who, let's say for the sake of argument are anti-gay - and the prospect of seeing two men together on a date would probably set off all types of prejudicial bells.

But who knows? Maybe the woman saw you or your partner and was insanely jealous she couldn't have you. Maybe she thought you were famous. Maybe she was looking past you at the server who gave her terrible service. There are a million reasons why she COULD have looked at you, but you'll never know. Best to just go about your way and let the haters hate, because those types of people will always find problems with everything, even in the land of smiles. :)

So I'm a white guy (from Eastern Europe) dating a Thai guy. I must say that we met at our university in London. Ive never really had any reason to visit Thailand until he finished his masters and moved back to Bangkok this September.

So I came here recently and on the first night, we were judged by a [please note] white couple in a restaurant. The woman was sitting with her back to us but keep turning to look at our table with an unfriendly expression every 5 mins or so.

We really got the vibe that she thought my bf was a hooker, which is ironic since he is both older than me and we were dressed very conservatively [i burn really badly so try to expose as little flesh as possible]. To add he actually comes from a slightly richer family than my own.

To sum up, I really did not expect this level of unfriendliness in Thailand especially from other white people.

Aside from your amusing cartoon at the top of the site, the rest is largely garbage repeated ad nauseum. Most westerners living in Thailand that are in a relationship are happy and prospering. You're only perpetuating stereotypes.

Idiots get ripped off everywhere. I recommend you don't include yourself among their ranks.

Thanks AJ, I only know of only one other foreign woman who has a Thai husband, so it is indeed a rare occurrence... maybe because, sadly, I've met very, very few Thai men that not reminded me of teenage boys at home alone on the weekend. But I'm glad to know they are out there! :)
Thanks for reading.

Thanks for your website. I've been living here with my Thai husband for seven years. I agree...the assumption that I'm rich can be very annoying...but constantly having to justify why I have married a Thai man really wears me down. The other is the intention I guess of some people to marry a farang...any farang, regardless of attraction or genuine connections. Thai men ask my husband how he 'got' a farang wife...and do i have any friends they could marry...lol. Anyway...just thought I'd throw my rare perspective of a farang lady married to a Thai man:)

Bilbo Douchebaggins, I was warned not to practice Thai in the bars as when speaking to other Thais where you learnt will be obvious and although you were just there to learn not everyone will think that!

"There goes another falang speaking bar-girl-Thai"

Although its probably better than my approach of not learning it at all!

In fairness, your girlfriend goes into a near-berzerker rage if the island speed boat ferry overcharges her by a hundred baht.

In all seriousness, don't underestimate the bars as a place to practice your Thai. I don't have a lot of opportunity in my everyday life to use mine: I don't really use it at home or with friends, because I don't think it's fair to impose my Rainmaneque fluency on them, but for the price of a few drinks I get a chance to improve my fluency in both speaking and listening, and occasionally even learn a little bit more.

Thanks for posting Eddy. I was talking to an old friend who lives in Taiwan and he said it's much the same there. Although we did settle on the fact that there is a big difference between 'stereotype' and 'racism'. Thais thinking that I'm rich and Christian is a stereotype; foreigners thinking Asian's can't drive is racist. Thankfully, there are much worse things that being stereotyped.
