The long and short here is get medical insurance while you’re in Thailand. You never know when something will happen. You can get decent coverage from about $800/year. If you can’t afford insurance, time to go home.
Had a friend who had a bike accident, no insurance and $5000 later he’d been fixed. Much more expensive than insurance.

In reply to Ging. Thanks Ging. Even in Canada the healthcare isn't as awesome as it's made out to be, but yeah...getting sick in the US is not something you'd ever want to do.

I remember when I first moved to the US and didn’t have any insurance yet,Rick always told me,” Don’t get sick.Don’t get into any kind of accident!” I know now how crazy it would cost me going to the hospital in the US!!!!

I do remember that, and I’m not sure which of our injuries was worse. I also do have a social security card but I’m not really sure what it’s for…30B scheme, I imagine. Anyway, the staff at Bangkok Christian were great, as have been every nurse, doctor and administrator that I’ve dealt with in Thailand. Almost makes going to the hospital worth it. Almost. 🙂

I had a similar experience when I ripped off the nail on my big toe after I had that bicycle accident while riding with you. I was admitted in the emergency room of my local hospital. I had to go back 2 or 3 times over the following weeks to change the dressing and then four times over the months for the tetanus jabs. Do you know how much that all cost me? ZERO. I presume you don’t have a social security card? I thought it was compulsory but I guess not.
